Looking back on Lifespan Medical’s first year, Dr. Sue Stock has seen a recurring trend: women in midlife experiencing significant changes to their health without clear guidance on available treatment options.
“Women’s health is influenced by a unique set of hormonal, metabolic and long-term risk factors that are often under-recognized,” says Dr. Stock. “Part of the vision in building Lifespan was to bring a more comprehensive approach to women’s health, one that looks at the whole picture and treats the root cause, not just the symptoms.
“Many women reach midlife feeling confused about the changes happening in their bodies,” Dr. Stock adds. “They tell me they’re tired, their sleep is lighter, weight is harder to manage, with many experiencing brain fog or mood changes. The question they ask is: ‘What’s happening to me?’”
The knowledge gap
For many, the answer lies in changes to their hormone levels.
Perimenopause, the transition leading up to menopause, can begin in a woman’s early 40s, sometimes earlier. As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, this can affect metabolism, sleep, cognitive function and cardiovascular health. Despite how common this transition is, many women report receiving little education during this stage. “Many patients have been told this is just a natural part of aging and are never informed about their treatment options,” says Dr. Stock.
“For many women, issues like bone loss, weight gain, increased cardiovascular risk and even long-term concerns like cognitive decline can be traced back, at least in part, to hormonal changes,” says Dr. Stock. “When we identify and treat these changes, we’re often getting to the root cause – not just managing symptoms. This has allowed many patients to reduce or even discontinue medications for depression, poor sleep, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol.”
Earlier detection matters
And this approach is not just for women in their 40s and 50s. “Many of my patients in their 60s and even 70s have also experienced significant benefits. Modern medicine offers women many choices and I want them to know they do not have to accept these changes as ‘a natural part of aging,’” says Dr. Stock.
In some cases, Lifespan’s in-depth preventative assessments have uncovered serious conditions that might otherwise have gone undetected.
“In some patients, we’ve identified early-stage cancers or significant cardiovascular issues in women who had no prior indication anything was wrong,” says Dr. Stock. “When we identify issues earlier, we expand treatment options and improve the chances of full recovery.”
These observations reflect a broader shift in women’s health: moving from reactive care toward more proactive assessment.
Protecting brain health
An emerging area that Dr. Stock is particularly interested in is brain health.
Women have roughly twice the lifetime risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease: about one in five women compared to one in 10 men. Much of this increased risk is linked to hormonal changes, along with metabolic health, sleep and cardiovascular function. The challenge is that brain changes begin silently, often decades before symptoms appear, which is why prevention is so important. By the time Alzheimer’s is detectable, treatment options are less effective.
“The encouraging part is that many of these risk factors can be managed but timing matters,” says Dr. Sue Stock. “By acting early and addressing hormonal, lifestyle and metabolic factors, we can help women significantly reduce their risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases.”
Over the past year, Dr. Stock has seen firsthand how many women have been left searching for answers to changes in their health. Her message is simple: these changes are real, interconnected and often treatable.
“No matter your age or stage of life, understanding your health is one of the most powerful steps you can take. Helping women find those answers is one of the reasons I opened Lifespan Medical,” she says.
